Plaque Unveiled for Pte Matthew Farrell, 33 Inf Bn

Yesterday, 7th November 2021, a plaque honouring Pte Matthew Farrell and erected by ONE was unveiled at Proper Fingal Day Services Centre by his nephew P.J. Farrell.

We are remembering and honouring Pte Matthew Farrell, who was a Medical Orderly, 2 Hospital Company and 33 Infantry Battalion, United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC).

The ceremony was opened by Cllr Ann Graves who assisted greatly in persuading Fingal County Council to allow the plaque to be erected. She thanked her colleagues on Fingal County Council, Liam Molloy and the Swords Historical Society and stated that today was all about the Farrell Family.

Wreaths were laid by Louise O’Reilly TD and Col Bernard Markey, OC CMU. Defence Forces Sgt Major, RSM Keith Caffrey, was also in attendance, which also included members of the Defence Forces, ONE, IUNVA, IDFMA, MPAI and the Swords community. A large number of the Farrell family were also in attendance. Mick Kinahan, President Leinster Area Council was in attendance along with ONE members’ from the Fr. James Gilmore Branch, and Roger Casement Branch.

The ceremony involved the unveiling of the plaque by P.J. Farrell, who then thanked everyone involved and all who attended.

There was a Minutes Silence, followed by ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ played by Martin ‘Bounce’ McEvoy, from the Drogheda and Slane Branch.

Refreshments were provided by Fingal Prosper.
