Niemba – 8th November 1960

Since 1961, ONE has remembered those who died in Niemba, DR Congo on the 8th November 1960 by holding an Annual Remembrance Mass and Wreath Laying Ceremony. This year’s ceremony was planned to be of the scale of the ceremonies held for the 50th Anniversary. Unfortunately, due to the COVID 19 pandemic and Government restriction, the commemoration on the planned scale is unable to take place.

The 60th Anniversary will be marked by the laying of a wreath by a Senior Defence Forces (DF) Officer and a further wreath will be laid by the ONE Board of Directors Chairperson. These will be photographed by a DF Photographer and the photographs will be posted on our social media pages. The photographs will be sent to both survivors (Tom Kenny and Joe Fitzpatrick) of the ambush and (where possible) to relatives of those who lost their lives. May they Rest in Peace

  1. My eldest brother Signalman Thomas Cronin R.I.P served with the 33rd Bn he was stationed in Albertville he went on to serve in Cyprus.

  2. Through the streets of Dublin City wound the cortage of the brave to their final place of resting in that lone Glassnevin Grave.
They were few but they were Valiant and their story does not end
for its true you live forever when you die to save a friend.
