‘I Am A Veteran’ – Diarmuid Higgins

Through our new campaign, ONE is highlighting our talented, highly skilled and diverse group of veterans, showcasing members who are making a difference in our communities and across Irish and international society.

Our fifth veteran’s story features Diarmuid Higgins. Diarmuid joined the Irish Defence Forces in 1977 as an Army Apprentice. He attended the Army Apprentice School in Naas, Co. Kildare as a member of the 22nd Pltn. In 1980 he transferred to the Naval Service until his retirement in 1998.

Diarmuid’s impressive career includes service on the LE Grainne, LE Fola, LE Deirdre, LE Emer, LE Aoife, LE Aisling, LE Eithne and LE Orla, in addition to domestic and overseas operations.

Since retiring, Diarmuid has dedicated his life to advocating for veterans and his community, serving as Secretary of Cobh Branch ONE, Chairperson of Southern Area Council of ONE and has just been elected as the new President of ONE. Diarmuid has been a driving force behind ONE’s Diversity and Inclusion strategy and is leading ONE’s efforts on developing the new Veteran’s Support Centre and Hostel in Cobh.

Diarmuid embodies how veterans continue to strengthen the nation and their communities after they retire their uniform.
